BACKGROUND MUSIC
What Is Going On In the background!
This Is the Music That Fills Out The Picture
Background
music sets the scene and provides atmosphere for the main event. Rarely
does it try to grab centre stage. After all this music is there to make you feel
comfortable and relaxed!
In the baroque and classical eras
music was used as a setting for lavish social parties and celebrations and
French kings in particular delighted in the latest music at their grandiose
dinners. Unfortunately, guests did not pay much attention to the music or the
musicians.
In more recent times player piano
music was often heard in bars and at social functions and the cinema pianist
provided the music that enabled the action to "look" real. This led on to the
advent of recorded music taking its place.
Erik Satie called his background music
furniture music, which often
contained indefinite repeats and showed a certain callous regard for this kind
of music.
Elevator
music is often played where large groups of people gather together
socially. It is usually soft playing music and the mood is created through light
classical pieces.
Ambient
music is of a more contemporary style where sounds from different genres
are often mingled with sounds from nature or the environment. All these styles
of music are loosely termed 'background' music.
This style of music is helpful for:
1. Setting the mood for a social event, or an educational
happening such as a graduation night.
2. Providing a relaxing atmosphere for parties and polite
conversation, particularly restaurants.
3. Making a more conducive atmosphere for enjoying oneself in an
hotel environment or bedroom.
4. Helping you to relax and gently fall asleep.
5. Enabling shoppers to be more willing to purchase your goods
and to enjoy the outing as a pleasurable event.
6. Soothing your nerves when sitting gingerly in the waiting
room.
7. Helping time to pass more quickly before your flight or next
engagement and while travelling on route.
8. Providing workers in offices and factories with a sense of
comfort during repetitive tasks and as a gentle additive to
increasing overall productivity.
Yes,
background music doesn't push its thumb at you and say, 'here I am!' Yet it
is so awesome in enabling us humans to relax and enjoy more of our everyday life
situations.
